A parent’s worst nightmare is the thought of something harmful happening to their children. To hear that your child has a life-threatening disease is a horrible thing that we think only happens to other people. The pain is deafening and unbelievable. Your world is turned completely upside down with broken dreams and a shattered future that you once held for your child. You struggle with what is to come. You wonder if anything will ever be normal again. You are constantly tormented by grief that never really goes away. You hold on to the triumphs and challenges, not wanting to miss one moment. I know this because I am living these words as I write them.
At the age of four my son Luke was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD); a muscle wasting disorder. It is a condition where the muscles deteriorate rapidly starting with the lower extremities, moving eventually to the upper body. Life expectancy for someone diagnosed with this affliction is late teens to early twenties.
Dealing with the muscle weakness of DMD has been a mixture of grave sadness, earth shaking fear and at times tremendous anger. By the age eight, muscle weakness left Luke unable to walk. Which lead to him spending more and more time not being active. I am sure you have heard the expression, “move it or lose.” With Luke this is all so true, but with Luke, he will lose it much faster.
Before Pulse, Luke at age 10 was about 10 pounds under weight. He had very bad breath, constipation, and only about 30 percent of his lung capacity. He would also tire very easily.
Now that Luke has been eating a small serving of Pulse almost every day for 15 months, I am happy to say he no longer has bad breath, (which went away immediately). He is regular (which I am sure he would be mortified I am even mentioning). He has more energy (which means no more dealing with a cranky kid). And for the time being he hasn’t lost any more of his lung capacity. But probably the best part is that he has gained 16 pounds and has grown 6 inches in the last 15 months!
Being Luke’s #1 advocate, caregiver and mother, I am always looking for ways to make Luke’s quality of life on this planet better. I am delighted that Pulse happened to me and my family. It is almost a miracle...but really is it?
Misty V., Alaska, USA
I met a woman at work one night munching on food out of a can. So of course I began to ask questions and I found I was interested in this product. She told me very little about Pulse and she said she would get back with me about the man that sells it at her church.
We met a few days later and off I went to work with my box in my car. I began to read that night and decided I would start the next day. I didn't know if this was for real and of course I have tried EVERYTHING out there and was currently doing an eating plan from a diet center. I looked at the carbs on the can and about had a coronary right there and just didn't know what I was going to do. This was going to wreck what I had been doing. I was caffeine free, sugar free, salt free for the most part and almost carb free too. I called the guy I got the food from. He said, “Trust me and give it your best and just see what the results tell you.” I was going to try it…what did I have to lose! I started the next day.
The next thing you know the 10 days were over and I was 11 pounds lighter! I felt better than I have in years. I have such bad allergies that doctors have been telling me I need to move to Arizona since I was about five years old. I am so miserable that I cannot function mentally or physically with all the pollens, molds, mildew, etc., that keep me sick from March to November. I have been living on all sorts of allergy medications for years, starting the second week in March. I have been drug free with no allergy symptoms at all from the second day with Pulse to now.
Since Pulse I haven’t had any dips in my blood sugars and I was dipping at least one to two times a day or more. I feel better physically and mentally and I thank the Food First program for giving me back my life. I am no longer miserable and I look pretty darn good, too. I have learned so much and I just want to share this with everyone just so they can reap the benefits of feeling better. Being healthy has no dollar sign large enough to feel this good. Again, thank you for the Food First program. I love me now.

About 10 years ago my poor nutritional habits and laziness started catching up with me. It came down to the simple fact that I wasn't taking care of my body. But I wouldn't listen to what my body was telling me. I ate like a king, without any care for what I was eating or how much I ate. I simply enjoyed eating.
In 1993, I encountered a severe case of diverticulitis, was hospitalized, and had 11 inches of my colon removed. After the surgery the doctor said it was the worse case he had seen in a 40-year-old. He also gave me the false hope that the chances of any recurrence of the diverticulitis were about 2 percent and that I should be able to eat what I want. He told me that I shouldn’t need to continue with my daily ritual of Metamucil. I was glad for this council and felt that I was on the road to recovery and could continue down the road with the same eating and exercise habits to which I was accustomed.
In about 3 years, the diverticulitis returned. The deterioration of my body continued to get worse. I drank about 4 cups of coffee a day and was suffering from acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), spastic colon and severe constipation. On Feb 14, 2001, I visited my doctor because I felt my blood pressure medication was not working right and felt I needed it adjusted. Instead, after taking some blood samples, the doctor determined I was a Type II diabetic. At the time I was dealing with a lot of work-related stress and my weight was at its peak of 234. My blood sugar that day was 413; the doctor nearly put me in the hospital.
I began to get serious and started losing weight through a strict diabetic diet. I did well. In fact, in 4 months I was down 30 pounds. I took up biking as an exercise. I even entered the MS 150 bike tour in September 2001. After that event, however, I fell off the wagon. I quit exercising and the weight came back on. Within 6 months, I was within 5 pounds of where I had started.
I was depressed and the doctor was prescribing more and more medicines. I was taking pills for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, anti-depressants, and I was using Metamucil again. I felt like a 70-year-old, needing 10 minutes to separate and organize my pills in a pillbox. I routinely took a nap during the day and I had very little energy.
In September 2002 the cardiologist recommended that I have a stress test and told me that I had what he thought looked like a blood clot in the left ventricle of my heart. That scared the heck out of me! He added to my pill regimen a “twice a day” dose of coumadin, a daily baby aspirin, and additional blood pressure meds.
After having chest pains (which turned out to be a false alarm caused by acid reflux) the doctor ordered a heart catheterization. It fortunately revealed no blockage, only some minor buildup of calcification in my major arteries. The threat of the clot was still there, but after a month, the doctor took me off the coumadin and told me that maybe it wasn't a clot after all. My cholesterol at the time was 211; triglycerides were 244, LDLs 125, HDLs 37. He diagnosed my chest pains as acid reflux and prescribed Prilosec.
That month, I met Carol Klingsmith at a Weight Watchers event. Carol was a distributor for the Food First products, and I began quizzing her about the Pulse that she let me sample. After a week of going back and forth by e-mail, I signed up for and tried Food First products.
It was a struggle to stick to the Pulse-only diet. I felt like I was a masochist, torturing myself into something I HAD to do because I had neglected my body for so long, and I forced myself to sticking to it. After about the fifth day though, I began to feel really good. My IBS and stress to my colon settled down, no more constipation or spastic colon, and no more acid reflux. With the Dynamic Plus I noticed more energy; I didn't require an afternoon nap after coming home from work. I wasn't hungry all the time. After 10 days, I had lost 10 pounds.
I have since done two other Food First programs. After the second I had lost another ten pounds. And with the third, I lost an additional five for a total of 30 pounds since starting. In the middle of the third program, I had more blood work done. My total cholesterol was 171, HDLs were 38 and LDLs were 117 and Triglycerides dropped to 78!
I am now off ALL my medications now and feel great! I continue to lose the weight gradually with a daily regimen of one can of pulse a day, exercise, and plenty of water. I am now much more conscious of the food that I eat. With my job, I travel a lot, and eat out quite frequently. I look for raw vegetable plates, and avoid the fried and overcooked foods….and stay away from the sugar. I’ve resolved to the fact that I’ll be a diabetic all of my life, even though I now have it under control. I’ve become very aware of how my body reacts to food.
The probiotic has become a daily regimen and I have noticed now that I very seldom have trouble with my colon and sleep better at night…without the morning discomfort of an overstressed colon. Before, when I was having trouble with my colon, I seldom ate more than one or two servings of vegetables a day or fruit in its raw form. But I wasn’t aware that that was the cause of my problem. I enjoy fruit, but never made it a habit of eating or including it in my daily diet. I also enjoy sweets (and still enjoy them) but with Pulse it helps curb this desire.
Ice cream used to be my vice; I made too many stops at the Dairy Queen for a Butterfinger Blizzard, or having an Orange Julius at the Mall. I now will occasionally have the fat-free yogurt with Pulse as a substitute. I seldom drank more than 2 to 3 glasses of pure water a day, thinking that I was getting my necessary liquids in coffee or iced tea. Now I consciously make an effort to have at least the 8 glasses of water a day, and not with a meal.
I have found a way of life now that keeps me going, with less stress, and more energy, knowing that I can keep up with my kids and be able to enjoy life! I’m 9 short years from retirement and want to be able to enjoy it without having medicines as a crutch to drag me down.

Today is the tenth day of Food First. I want to shout, “I did it!”
One of the things that has helped me deal with my sweet cravings has been the Carob Pulse. I would push all the carob chips aside, then eat the rest. I would eat the carob chips at the end, savoring every bite. About half way through the program, my husband was eating my favorite ice cream, Haagen-Dazs Chocolate Chocolate Chip (I freely admit to being a chocoholic). I was eating my Carob Pulse, and held up my spoon asking him for a bite. He asked if I really wanted one. I said NO!
On the initial questionnaire, I was asked how much I expected to loose through Food First. I saw from other success stories that some people have lost a significant amount. I was hopeful when I typed in eight pounds. Imagine my surprise when I finally stepped on the scales and it told me I had lost TEN POUNDS! I got off the scales, and got on it again to make sure I was not mistaken. All I can say is WOW!
I have not been on my regular routine of swimming because of an injury from an auto accident. This program has encouraged me to work on getting back to exercising on a regular basis. My sponsor has been very supportive calling on a regular basis. She was as happy as I was over the little victories.
I plan to incorporate Pulse in my daily diet, adding fresh fruit and vegetables, and making better choices. This is an exciting journey! Thank you for the opportunity, for the daily e-mails that encourage me and for the support I have from my sponsor. I'm anxious to share all I've learned with some of my friends.

Before I began my Food First program, I weighed 220 pounds and I am 5' 3 ½". Since starting the program 2 weeks ago, I've lost 24 pounds. I've lost 7 inches on my hips, 4 from my bust and 5 from the waist.
I'm not a good cook, so if I can eat something out of a can, it's perfect for me. I take Pulse to work with me and make it my breakfast and bunch—it’s exactly what I needed. Before I started the program, I ate a few raw, whole foods every day, because I had salad almost every day for lunch. But, I didn't eat breakfast. I probably wasn't eating enough, so my body would store what I did eat. I've always been a big water drinker, but I often drank Coke.
Pulse gives me at least 24 raw, whole foods, plus I still have a salad. My water consumption is still high, but I've dropped the Coke. It doesn't even appeal to me now. People at work are noticing the changes, because they ask me, "What are you doing with yourself?" I've been sharing the food with them and they all like it. The great thing with Food First is that often with rapid weight loss, you get a run-down look. That definitely hasn't happened to me-I look great.
My acid reflux is gone, I have abundant energy, and I sleep sound and wake up well rested. I have a Windwalker exercise machine and now I'm using it a lot. I'm up at 3:00 a.m. and exercising on it before work.
Pulse works well for me and I'm very impressed with the program. It's a dream come true.

I will soon be 92. My son introduced Pulse to me and I decided to do a 10-day program. I had enough energy and did not feel deprived. I lost 12 pounds at the end of the program.
I’m now eating a salad and perhaps some fruit each day. When added to the 24 raw, whole foods in Pulse, I’ve really expanded my intake of raw, whole foods. My water intake was not the best: 2-4 glasses a day, plus coffee. Now, I’m drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day.
One great benefit is that I got rid of a persistent dry cough that I’d had for several years. The doctors told me it had something to do with my stomach. I haven't coughed since doing the 10-day program.
I plan on having Pulse everyday to keep fit and healthy for the rest of my life!

We’ve lived in the Alaska “bush,” for more than 30 years. Since retiring in 1997, we travel to the lower states every fall for 6 months. Having 5-minute access to all the “wonderful” fast food restaurants and stores, and the resultant change in lifestyle, became more and more obvious.
I had added a few pounds and clothes size even though I exercise often. When I first started the 10-day program, I was quite surprised I lost weight. Even though I was losing weight, I still maintained a high energy level, which surprised me.
It’s hard to get fresh vegetables and fruits in Alaska. Consequently, I was lucky to eat one serving of vegetables every day. I didn’t eat much fruit at all. I’ve been wanting to get healthy food into my life and Food First was a great, convenient way to do that.
Now, thanks to Food First, I’m getting at least 24 raw, whole foods each day. I would get my water from drinking coffee and a mixed protein drink. I also drank a lot of soda. I was lucky to drink one glass of water a day. Now I get 6-8 glasses of water every day.
My maintenance regime is Pulse for breakfast and for my evening meal and snacks. My noon meal consists of high protein, salads and starches. This routine has helped me maintain my weight because I endeavor to run 3 to 4 miles every other day and bike 10 to 12 miles on the off days. I also lift weights. Before Food First, I was doing this same routine, but I’d be exhausted after and would often take a nap. Now, I have much better stamina.
I also think pulse has been a significant factor in my energy level. I believe it has helped my sinusitis problem. I no longer take daily medication for my breathing problem. My heart rate and blood pressure are down. I definitely have more energy and a sense of well being.
My wife said the biggest change she noticed was I don't say I’m tired 5 to 10 times a day, and that I haven’t been napping every day.

I love the Pulse! I did the Food First program and found all the foods to be delicious. I am 56, have always had a lot of energy and I’m active, mostly with my horses. I usually do not have a weight problem, but try to eat healthy foods and drink lots of water. I am convinced: we are what we eat and drink!
I have noticed the older I get, the harder it is to get off the extra 5 to 10 pounds I gain during the winter months. I had been craving more sweets and chocolate the last 6 to 8 months, so I was looking for a food that would help with my diet. I’ve always been pretty conscious about what I ate and before the Food First program I was typically eating between three and four different raw, whole foods every day. Now, through a few simple, daily habits, I’ve increased that ratio to at least 24, plus raw, whole foods; and that may be a little conservative!
As a result of my increased ratios, I lost 7 pounds during the 10 days, and only wanted to loose 5 to 10 pounds! It’s now the end of May and I have not gained any of it back. It is so convenient to grab a can of Pulse and eat breakfast on the way to work! I’m not really even “obsessing” about my diet, I just replace breakfast or lunch with a can of Pulse a few times a week and continue to snack on it throughout the day.
I have been on the Food for Life program for three months now, and I still don't have my craving for sweets any more, and I don't crave chocolate, either, which is a first for me! I also went from 8-10 cups of coffee a day down to 1 or 2 cups. I always try to have 12 to 16 glasses of water a day. I am sure my body appreciates the nutrition it is getting from Pulse! I have a lot of energy and I am healthy and feel great all the time.

I have to admit I am as skeptical as they come. My fiancé works at a local spa and she's around a lot of people that are into the “natural” thing. They told us about the 10-day Food First program and convinced us to go to a meeting. We went to the meeting where we learned about America's eating habits, and everything made sense. In the past 2 years I have reduced my portion sizes, started exercising and lost 30 pounds, but I wanted more. I guess what I wanted was more raw, whole foods.
We first started Food First in April because my fiancé wanted to lose some weight for our upcoming wedding; I started to support her. Since starting and continuing on the program, I've lost 11 pounds, she’s lost 13, and we have never felt better. I have more energy, I’m getting by with less sleep, and my clothes feel noticeably bigger. In fact, I had to return a good portion of our honeymoon clothes because they no longer fit me!
I was surprised to find that the program made me WANT good foods more. I didn't expect primary nutrition to have such an impact on the way I eat. I hadn't eaten fruit in 10 years, but now I eat it more than once a day, and ENJOY it! I would rather spend $3 on a serving of Pulse for lunch than go out for fast food.

I am a registered nurse who teaches cardiac rehab education. I have been going to several very expensive classes and seminars to learn about diet and risk factors for cardiac patients and then returning to teach my patients. I have also been trying to practice what I teach and have been eating only chicken and fish, using olive oil and working hard to reduce my cholesterol, along with regular exercise. Of course, I never gave up the French fries, lots of chocolate, lots of pasta dishes and ate very few vegetables. I thought I was doing great because I only had DIET soda with my chicken sandwich and fries. That means my weight never went down and I was always sluggish. While being heavy all my life and doing the yoyo dieting for years, I just decided to be happy being fat. Besides, being over weight is in my genes, I told myself.
One day a nurse friend of mine said there was a class in Denver about nutrition and asked if I wanted to go with her. I immediately said yes since I love to learn new things. I couldn't believe this class was free since I paid $250 for the last class I attended. While attending my first Food First “class,” I soon figured out that this was a company and I was NOT interested. But since we traveled for more than an hour, I decided to at least hear them out.
To make a long story short, I decided to do the 10-day program and started in early February. I lost 10 pounds and my knee pain went away. Now it is the start of June and I have lost more than 40 pounds. People just ask me, “What are you doing, you look so good!” I love it, and it’s all because of getting more raw, whole foods into my life. I eat at least 2 servings of Pulse a day now and no longer crave French fries and chocolate. I no longer have anything “diet” and only drink water. My body craves vegetables now and I feel great. I love that primary nutrition has not only changed my body, but cleared my mind and given me energy. Thanks, Food First program.
Evelyn D., Colorado, USA
I am a very active, physically-fit individual. My weight has been consistent for more than 20 years and losing any more than three pounds has seemed impossible. My cousin introduced me to the Food First program.
After a week I needed to return to Florida for a few days. I went into my normal routine of walking the beach in my work-out clothes (running shorts and sports bra). I have walked that beach every day forever — but never with heads turning and looking at me the way people did on my seventh day of Food First!
After 10 days I lost nine pounds. I feel great and am so motivated to keep it off knowing that my body is so used to being heavier. I love the taste of the food and I look forward to a long and healthy relationship with the Food First program.
Sunny S., Florida, USA
My first 10 days using just Pulse, Parched Pulse and water, I lost eight pounds and two inches.
I am continuing to use Pulse for meals once or twice a day, with Parched Pulse as a snack between meals. I have not lost additional weight since my 10-day program, but have not gained, either. I intend to stay with this program until I lose a total of 25 pounds.
Carmela D., Hawaii, USA
I am extremely overweight. In the past I could diet and lose some weight, about five pounds a month, and had reached a reasonable weight for many years. After my first pregnancy, however, I couldn't lose any weight and after my second, I gained even more.
As I got older I found my weight would just not drop. I tried Weight Watchers several times, but I was always hungry. For the last two years my doctor has been recommending I consider a gastric bypass. I really did not want to because of the risk associated with the procedure.
I am now on Day 5 of Food First and have lost seven pounds. I usually have three servings of Pulse a day and I have not been hungry. I believe that with Pulse I should be able to regain control of my weight.
Carole B., Minnesota, USA
I have a success story that is on-going. Since November, I have lost 26 pounds and feel great. I have 60 more to loose and am hopeful that Pulse will continue to work for me. I like the convenience, healthiness, and the nutrition all in one package. It fits into my life style.
